The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is the country's national standards authority, operating under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution of the Indian government. To ensure product quality, the BIS has published over 20000 Indian Standards (IS) and Priced Publications (PP), including over 400 new standards and 400 revisions. Kitchen Accessories and Appliances, and other items have ISI marked, which is regarded a mandatory requirement in India.
The BIS Product Certification Scheme (ISI Mark) strives to provide the ultimate customer with a third-party guarantee of product quality, safety, and reliability.
Any manufacturer who is confident in his product's potential to meet the BIS standard can apply for product certification on a voluntary basis. Mandatory Certification, commonly known as the Compulsory Registration Scheme, is a type of mandatory certification (CRS). While product certification is otherwise voluntary, the Government of India has made mandatory certification of several products on the basis of public health and safety, security, infrastructural requirements, and mass consumption by Orders issued from time to time under various Acts.
