BIS Certification – Process, Types, Documentation, and Products

Petroleum and Explosive Safety Organization

BIS Certificate

The abbreviation BIS stands for Bureau of Indian Standards, an Indian National Standard Body established under the BIS Act of 2016. It was created to facilitate the establishment of product standardization, marking, quality certification, and incidental or related issues. BIS is giving observable and measurable benefits to the national economy through the provision of safe and reliable goods of high quality, the reduction of consumer health risks, the encouragement of import and export alternatives, the reduction of variety proliferation, etc.

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) in India is the organization that grants BIS certification. The BIS Licence represents a third party, namely BIS, assuring customers of the integrity, trustworthiness, and reliability of any product. The BIS is engaged in a number of activities, such as product certification, standardization, testing, hallmarking, calibration schemes, etc.

Product certification by BIS is optional. However, the Indian government has mandated it for several products in light of public health. According to a government announcement, BIS certificate is mandatory for 380 products. The ISI mark (also known as the "standard mark") may be used on products by license holders thanks to the BIS certification. Products with the ISI (Indian Standards Institution) label are of high quality.

Despite being optional, the government promotes BIS certification for items for the following reasons:

  • It protects the general public's health
  • It offers quality control.
  • It safeguards consumers from dangerous goods
  • It increases consumer trust.

Advantages for BIS Registration

  • Ensures high levels of quality because goods with a BIS registration are produced per specified rules
  • BIS-certified products reduce environmental concerns since BIS has set standards that forbid using specific chemicals and materials
  • Ensures that BIS-certified items are genuine and exhibit high-quality performance and dependability
  • After evaluating product samples in BIS-established laboratories, which guarantees quality control and high-quality products, BIS registration is issued.

FAQ’s

How can I get BIS Certificate for an Overseas Manufacturer?
Fill out the regular application form first, and then attach all required paperwork. The next step is to designate an AIR—an authorized Indian representative—using the standard nomination form. Finally, submit these documents and the customary charge to the BIS headquarters in New Delhi.
Who Requires BIS Certificate?
Manufacturing Units effectively receive BIS Registration Certificates. But eligible goods importers and traders can also obtain this certification on behalf of their specific Manufacturing Units.
Validity of BIS Certification
Two years.
